Zoetrope were a Chicago heavy metal outfit formed in 1976, carving out a gritty hybrid they called “street metal”—a collision of speed/thrash riffing and the raw energy of the city’s hardcore punk scene. They came up alongside bands at O’Banion’s punk bar and carried that crossover DNA into albums like Amnesty (1985) and A Life of Crime (1987), both marked by fast tempos, socially charged themes, and a tough, working‑class edge. The lineup shifted frequently—most notably with guitarist Ken Black’s departure mid‑recording of A Life of Crime—but core members like Kevin Michael and Barry Stern kept the band’s identity anchored in Chicago’s underground. Their final album, Mind Over Splatter (1993), closed out a run that left Zoetrope remembered as a cult bridge between Midwest punk ferocity and early American thrash.
