Woolworths, originally founded by Frank Winfield Woolworth in 1879 in Utica, New York, was one of the world’s first and most influential “five-and-dime” retail chains, pioneering fixed-price merchandising and modern department store practices. From its early success in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the company expanded rapidly across the U.S. and internationally, including the UK, Canada, Germany, and Mexico, becoming a household name for affordable goods ranging from clothing and housewares to toys and confectionery. At its height in the 20th century, Woolworths operated thousands of stores worldwide and even built the Woolworth Building in New York City, once the tallest skyscraper in the world. However, rising competition and changing retail trends led to its decline: U.S. stores closed in 1997, the UK chain collapsed in 2008, while the German subsidiary survived and continues to operate today.
