WIRL (West Indies Records Limited) was a pioneering Jamaican and Barbadian record label and studio founded in 1958 by Edward Seaga, playing a crucial role in the birth of modern Caribbean music. It produced early ska, calypso, and Jamaican R&B, released major local hits like Higgs & Wilson’s “Oh Manny Oh,” and operated one of the region’s first pressing plants, later expanding into Barbados. As Seaga shifted into politics, he sold WIRL to bandleader Byron Lee in 1964, who transformed it into Dynamic Sounds—an upgraded studio that went on to host global artists such as the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon, while continuing WIRL’s legacy as a cornerstone of Caribbean music production.
