Tortoise are an American post‑rock band formed in Chicago in 1990, whose genre‑blending sound fuses jazz, dub, krautrock, electronica, and minimalism, making them one of the most influential experimental groups of the 1990s. Initially conceived as a rhythm‑section collective by Doug McCombs and John Herndon, the band expanded with John McEntire, Dan Bitney, and later Jeff Parker, developing a distinctive instrumental style built around layered percussion, bass, and vibraphones. Their breakthrough album Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996) and the jazz‑inflected TNT (1998) cemented their reputation for pushing boundaries, while subsequent records continued to explore new textures. Though not a conventional jazz band, their improvisational spirit and rhythmic sophistication placed them at the heart of the Chicago post‑rock scene, influencing countless experimental and indie acts and securing their legacy as pioneers of modern instrumental music.
