The Velvet Underground were an American rock band formed in New York City in 1964, whose fusion of avant‑garde art, raw guitar sound, and urban lyricism made them one of the most influential groups in rock history despite limited commercial success during their original run. Fronted by singer‑guitarist Lou Reed alongside multi‑instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Moe Tucker, they became closely associated with Andy Warhol, serving as the house band at his studio, The Factory, and collaborating with German singer Nico on their landmark debut The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). That album, with songs like Heroin and Venus in Furs, shocked audiences with its frank depictions of drugs and sexuality, while later records such as White Light/White Heat (1968), The Velvet Underground (1969), and Loaded (1970) expanded their experimental reach. Though they disbanded in the early 1970s, their uncompromising style and subject matter directly shaped the development of punk, new wave, and alternative rock, earning them posthumous recognition as one of the most important and groundbreaking bands of the 20th century.
