The Sound were an English post‑punk band led by Adrian Borland, and their 1980 debut album Jeopardy is considered a cult classic of the genre—raw, urgent, and critically acclaimed despite poor commercial success. Emerging from Borland’s earlier punk group The Outsiders, The Sound recorded Jeopardy cheaply at Elephant Studios in London, yet its stark intensity and songs like I Can’t Escape Myself, Heartland, and Missiles earned glowing reviews from NME, Melody Maker, and Sounds, who praised its honesty and power. Though the band never achieved mainstream fame, Jeopardy has since been recognized as one of post‑punk’s most underrated records, influencing later acts and cementing The Sound’s reputation as a band of uncompromising vision.
