The Pretty Things were a British rock band formed in 1963 by singer Phil May and guitarist Dick Taylor (an early Rolling Stones member), quickly gaining notoriety for their raw R&B sound and rebellious image that rivaled the Stones’ own swagger. Known for gritty hits like Don’t Bring Me Down and Honey I Need, they later pushed into psychedelia and progressive rock, most famously with S.F. Sorrow (1968), considered the first rock opera and a major influence on The Who’s Tommy. Though they never achieved mainstream fame, their fearless experimentation—from garage rock chaos to avant-garde concept albums—earned them cult status and admiration from peers like David Bowie and Led Zeppelin, cementing their legacy as one of Britain’s most innovative yet underappreciated bands.
