The Modern Lovers were a groundbreaking proto-punk band formed in 1970 by Jonathan Richman in Natick, Massachusetts, blending raw garage rock energy with quirky, introspective lyrics. Their original lineup included future members of The Cars (David Robinson) and Talking Heads (Jerry Harrison), and their sound was heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground. Though their debut album The Modern Lovers wasn’t released until 1976, it had been recorded years earlier and featured cult classics like “Roadrunner” and “Pablo Picasso.” The band’s minimalist style and Richman’s offbeat charm helped shape the future of punk, new wave, and indie rock, making them a beloved touchstone for generations of outsider musicians.
