The Gordons were a brutally loud and sonically adventurous punk/post‑punk band from Christchurch, New Zealand, formed in 1980 by Alister Parker, John Halvorsen, and Brent McLachlan. Emerging in the wake of the AK79 compilation, they quickly gained notoriety for their overwhelming live volume and abrasive, feedback‑laden sound that fused punk aggression with semi‑industrial textures. Their debut single Future Shock (1980) and self‑titled album (1981) were hailed as groundbreaking, with Rip It Up magazine naming the album the best of that year. Though they split and re‑formed in various lineups, their influence endured, eventually evolving into the acclaimed band Bailter Space. In 2013, their debut was honored as a New Zealand Classic Album, cementing The Gordons’ reputation as one of the country’s most uncompromising and innovative underground acts.
