The Dancing Cigarettes were a Bloomington, Indiana avant‑pop/post‑punk outfit active from 1979 to 1983, known for their jagged dissonance, oddball humor, and a sound that swung between Beefheart‑style squonk and Devo‑esque bounce. Their rotating lineup—typically Michael Gitlin, Emily Bonus, Tim Noe, Jaclyn Oddi, John Terrill, and Don Trubey—channeled angular rhythms, atonal clusters, and modular song structures into cult classics like Pop Doormat, Broken Windows, and Puppies in a Sack. They were central to the early‑’80s Bloomington underground alongside The Gizmos and Zero Boys, playing local haunts like the Bluebird and touring nationally, including CBGB and the 9:30 Club. Their legacy survives through reissues such as 1980–1981: The Gulcher Recordings and Dance Dogs Dance, which capture their eccentric, brainy, and deeply DIY energy.
