Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were a ferocious, minimalist cornerstone of New York’s late‑70s no wave scene, led by a teenage Lydia Lunch whose slash‑and‑burn guitar, barked vocals, and refusal of melody or structure made the band a radical break from both punk and rock tradition. Their songs—often under a minute—were jagged bursts of negative space, thudding drums, scraped guitar noise, and confrontational performance energy, captured on a handful of singles and their crucial appearance on Brian Eno’s No New York compilation. Though they existed only from 1976–1979, their stark aesthetic and anti‑rock philosophy became a blueprint for later noise, avant‑punk, and experimental scenes, cementing them as one of the most uncompromising and influential acts of the era.
