Tank is a British heavy metal band formed in 1980 by Algy Ward, known for their raw, Motörhead-inspired sound and prominent role in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Their debut album Filth Hounds of Hades (1982) is widely regarded as a NWOBHM classic, praised for its aggressive energy and punk-infused metal style. Like Motörhead, Tank featured a power trio format with a singing bassist and lyrics that often celebrated war, rebellion, and excess. Despite lineup changes and legal disputes—leading to two competing versions of the band—their legacy endures through cult albums and continued performances by both the Tucker/Evans and Algy Ward-led factions. Tank’s gritty aesthetic and uncompromising sound made them a favorite among metal purists and underground fans alike.
