Suburban Lawns were a quirky American post‑punk/new wave band from Long Beach, California, active between 1978 and 1983, best remembered for their eccentric frontwoman Su Tissue and their cult single “Janitor.” Formed by CalArts students, the group combined jerky rhythms, surreal lyrics, and deadpan stage presence, quickly gaining notoriety with their debut single Gidget Goes to Hell (1979), whose Jonathan Demme‑directed video aired on Saturday Night Live. Their self‑titled album (1981) on I.R.S. Records became a cult classic, showcasing their manic, experimental style that blended punk energy with art‑school absurdity. Though they released only one more EP (Baby, 1983) before disbanding, Suburban Lawns left a lasting impression on the LA new wave scene, with Su Tissue later pursuing avant‑garde piano studies and a brief acting role, while other members splintered into new projects
