Stump was an Irish-English experimental rock band active from 1983 to 1988. The band was known for its quirky, avant-garde style, blending elements of post-punk, alternative rock, and surreal humor.
Their music was often compared to Captain Beefheart and The Fall, featuring unconventional rhythms, oddball lyrics, and a playful approach to songwriting. They gained attention with their 1986 EP Mud on a Colon and their mini-album Quirk Out, which included their cult hit "Buffalo". The song appeared on the influential NME C86 compilation and was performed on Channel 4's The Tube.
Their only full-length album, A Fierce Pancake (1988), was recorded in Berlin and London and produced by Holger Hiller with assistance from Stephen Street. Despite critical acclaim, the album did not achieve mainstream success, and the band split later that year.
