Peng! is the debut studio album by Anglo-French band Stereolab, released on 26 May 1992 by Too Pure, blending experimental pop, indie rock, and noise into a distinctive sound that set the template for their future work. Recorded in April 1992, it features Tim Gane’s guitar and Farfisa organ textures alongside Lætitia Sadier’s cool, detached vocals, with tracks like “Super Falling Star,” “Peng! 33,” and “Surrealchemist” showcasing their mix of motorik rhythms and avant-pop sensibilities. The album’s title—taken from a German comic-strip onomatopoeia for a loud pop or bang—and its cover art, derived from the underground Swiss comic Der tödliche Finger, reflect the band’s playful, art-forward aesthetic. Though not a commercial hit, Peng! reached No. 6 on the UK Independent Albums chart and has since been reissued multiple times, including a 2018 remaster, cementing its place as the starting point of Stereolab’s influential career.
