Spy Smasher was a Golden Age superhero introduced by Fawcett Comics in 1940, created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck, and later absorbed into DC Comics, where he became a cult figure of wartime pulp adventure. His alter ego, Alan Armstrong, was a wealthy Virginian who fought espionage and sabotage during World War II using his intellect, combat skills, and a versatile vehicle called the Gyrosub, which could function as a plane, car, and submarine. He battled villains like The Mask while occasionally teaming up with Captain Marvel, embodying patriotic anxieties of the era. After the war, he was briefly rebranded as Crime Smasher before fading from popularity, though DC revived him in later crossover stories and even introduced a modern female successor, Katarina Armstrong, in Birds of Prey (2007).
