Songs: Ohia was the primary musical project of American singer-songwriter Jason Molina from 1995 to 2003, centered around his haunting tenor voice and stark, lo-fi blend of indie rock, folk, and alt-country. Based in Ohio, Molina worked with a rotating cast of musicians, releasing acclaimed albums on Secretly Canadian such as The Lioness (2000), Ghost Tropic (2000), and Didn’t It Rain (2002), before transitioning into Magnolia Electric Co. in 2003. The name referenced both the Hawaiian ‘Ōhi‘a tree and Molina’s home state of Ohio, reflecting his mix of personal and mythic imagery. His songs often carried themes of loneliness, struggle, and resilience, earning him a devoted following in underground music circles. Though Molina’s life was cut short in 2013 due to health issues related to alcoholism, his work as Songs: Ohia remains deeply influential in shaping the sound of modern Americana and indie folk.
