The 1930 FIFA World Cup, held in Uruguay from July 13 to July 30, was the inaugural tournament of the FIFA World Cup. Uruguay was chosen as the host nation to celebrate the centenary of its first constitution and because the national team had retained their football title at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Thirteen teams participated, with matches played in Montevideo. The final saw Uruguay defeat Argentina 4-2 in front of 68,346 spectators at the Estadio Centenario, making Uruguay the first nation to win the World Cup.
