Silver Apples were a groundbreaking New York electronic rock duo formed in 1967 by Simeon Coxe and drummer Danny Taylor, known for their pioneering use of oscillators and hypnotic rhythms that predated krautrock and modern electronica. Their debut Silver Apples (1968) and follow-up Contact (1969) fused psychedelic rock with experimental electronics, with Simeon’s homemade oscillator rig (“The Simeon”) creating a futuristic sound far ahead of its time. Though a lawsuit over Contact’s cover art led to their collapse in 1970, the band was rediscovered in the 1990s, sparking a revival and the release of The Garden (recorded in 1970, issued in 1998). Revered as cult innovators, Silver Apples influenced generations of artists from Suicide to Portishead, cementing their legacy as unsung pioneers of electronic music.
