Interestingly, the exterior shots of Shermer High in The Breakfast Club were filmed at Maine North High School in Des Plaines, Illinois. This real-life school had closed in 1981 due to low attendance, making it an ideal filming location. The library scenes, however, were shot in a gymnasium transformed into the now-famous library set.
Hughes drew inspiration for Shermer High from his own experiences at Glenbrook North High School, which is located in Northbrook, Illinois. This connection adds a layer of authenticity to the fictional school and its portrayal of suburban teenage life.
