Serial Experiments Lain is a 1998 Japanese anime series created by Yasuyuki Ueda, written by Chiaki J. Konaka, and directed by Ryūtarō Nakamura, that follows Lain Iwakura, a socially withdrawn teenage girl who becomes increasingly entangled with “the Wired,” a vast virtual network resembling the internet. Across its 13 episodes, the show blends cyberpunk, psychological horror, and avant‑garde imagery to explore themes of identity, reality, consciousness, and the blurring boundaries between technology and human existence. Beginning with an email from a classmate who has committed suicide but claims to live on inside the Wired, Lain’s journey grows surreal and unsettling as she encounters conspiracies, shadowy figures, and questions of divinity in cyberspace. Widely praised for its originality, atmosphere, and prescient depiction of digital alienation, the series won the Excellence Prize at the 1998 Japan Media Arts Festival and remains a cult classic for its haunting vision of life in the information age.
