Sarah Records was a fiercely independent British label based in Bristol, active from 1987 to 1995, known for its pure-hearted commitment to indie pop, DIY ethics, and political idealism. Founded by Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes, it released mostly 7" singles from jangly, emotionally resonant bands like The Field Mice, Heavenly, and The Orchids, often wrapped in minimalist artwork and poetic sleeve notes. Rejecting industry norms like multi-formatting and chart manipulation, Sarah positioned itself as a label “run from a record buyer’s point of view,” emphasizing fairness, feminism, and anti-corporate values. When it hit its 100th release, the label threw a party and shut itself down—no encores, just a perfect ending.
