Samson were a pioneering band in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), formed in London in 1977 by guitarist Paul Samson, and best known for launching the career of Bruce Dickinson before his rise with Iron Maiden. Their early lineup featured the masked drummer Thunderstick and bassist Chris Aylmer, with Dickinson—then known as “Bruce Bruce”—joining for their breakout albums Head On (1980) and Shock Tactics (1981). Samson’s sound fused gritty hard rock with theatrical flair, and their live shows were infamous for Thunderstick’s cage performances. Despite critical acclaim and Reading Festival triumphs, the band struggled with management issues and lineup changes, eventually shifting toward blues rock under Paul Samson’s leadership. Though overshadowed by NWOBHM giants, Samson’s legacy endures through cult albums and their role in shaping British metal’s evolution.
