NSU Motorenwerke AG, commonly known as NSU, was a German manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles. Founded in 1873 by Christian Schmidt and Heinrich Stoll, the company originally produced knitting machines before transitioning to bicycles and later motorized vehicles. The name "NSU" comes from the rivers Neckar and Sulm, near the company's headquarters in Neckarsulm, Germany.
NSU gained prominence for its innovative motorcycles and cars, including the NSU Ro 80, which featured a revolutionary rotary engine. In 1969, NSU was acquired by Volkswagen and merged with Auto Union, eventually forming the foundation of the modern Audi brand. Today, NSU's legacy lives on through Audi, and its history is celebrated at the Audi site in Neckarsulm.
