Nightwing were a British hard‑rock/symphonic‑rock band formed in 1978 by bassist Gordon Rowley after leaving Strife, building a reputation through muscular, melodic guitar work, big keyboard textures, and a clean, anthemic production style that sat somewhere between NWOBHM grit and AOR polish. Their early lineup—Rowley, Eric Percival, Kenny Newton, and Alec Johnson—released Something in the Air (1980), then hit their stride with Black Summer (1982), Stand Up and Be Counted (1983), and My Kingdom Come (1984), albums that did especially well in Eastern Europe and landed them festival slots including Reading. Frequent lineup shifts brought in notable voices like Max Bacon (later of GTR), but the core sound stayed consistent: driving bass, bright synths, and hook‑forward hard rock. They disbanded in 1987, later re‑formed in the ’90s, and eventually released 8472 in 2008—cementing their status as one of those cult UK rock acts whose catalog is a treasure trove for fans of melodic, keyboard‑rich heavy rock.
