Mtume Umoja Ensemble was a short-lived but influential spiritual jazz collective led by percussionist and activist James Mtume, best known for their 1972 live album Alkebu-Lan: Land of the Blacks, recorded at The East cultural center in Brooklyn. The ensemble featured a powerhouse lineup including Stanley Cowell, Gary Bartz, Leroy Jenkins, and Andy Bey, blending avant-garde improvisation with Afrocentric themes and spoken word. The album’s title references the ancient name for Africa and reflects Mtume’s commitment to Black liberation and cultural pride. Released on Strata-East Records, it’s considered a landmark in politically charged jazz, merging freeform energy with communal consciousness and laying groundwork for Mtume’s later work in funk and R&B.
