Motown Record Corporation, founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in Detroit on January 12, 1959, became one of the most influential Black‑owned businesses in American history and a defining force in popular music. Originally launched as Tamla Records before being incorporated as Motown in 1960, its name combined “motor” and “town” in homage to Detroit’s auto industry. Motown pioneered the “Motown Sound”—a polished, soulful blend of gospel, R&B, and pop—that produced an extraordinary run of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, with artists like The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson. Between 1960 and 1969, Motown scored 79 Billboard Top 10 singles, breaking racial barriers by achieving crossover success with white audiences. In 1972, Gordy moved the company to Los Angeles, expanding into film and television, and though it was eventually sold to MCA in 1988 and later absorbed into Universal Music Group, Motown’s legacy endures as a cultural movement that reshaped American music and society.
