Kyuss was a pioneering American stoner rock band formed in Palm Desert, California, in 1987, originally under the name Katzenjammer before evolving into Sons of Kyuss and finally Kyuss. Known for their heavy, down-tuned guitars, desert-baked grooves, and psychedelic sludge, they helped define the genre alongside acts like Sleep and Monster Magnet. Their lineup included future luminaries like Josh Homme (later of Queens of the Stone Age) and Brant Bjork, with John Garcia’s raw vocals anchoring their sound. Albums like Blues for the Red Sun (1992) and Welcome to Sky Valley (1994) became cult classics, celebrated for their raw production and hypnotic riffing. Though they disbanded in 1995, Kyuss’s influence reverberates through modern rock, metal, and the entire desert music scene.
