Jeff Buckley (1966–1997) was an American singer-songwriter celebrated for his soaring multi-octave voice and emotionally charged songwriting, best known for his 1994 debut album Grace and his haunting rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Born in Anaheim, California, and the son of folk musician Tim Buckley, he emerged from New York’s East Village club scene in the early 1990s, first gaining attention with the Live at Sin-é EP before releasing Grace, which blended rock, folk, and blues with ethereal intensity. Though the album initially had modest commercial success, it later earned critical acclaim and influenced artists from Thom Yorke to Matt Bellamy. Buckley tragically drowned in Memphis in 1997 while working on his second album, My Sweetheart the Drunk, leaving behind a legacy of posthumous releases and a reputation as one of the most gifted and enigmatic voices of his generation.
