Indian Motorcycle was founded in 1901 by George M. Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom. The first Indian motorcycle was introduced in 1901 and had a 1.75 horsepower engine that could reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. The company opened a factory in Massachusetts and began mass-producing motorcycles. In their first year on the market, a rider on an Indian motorcycle won a race from Boston to New York.
The World's Fastest Indian Movie (2005) tells the story of New Zealander Burt Munro, who spent years rebuilding a 1920 Indian motorcycle, which helped him set the land speed world record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967.
