Hanatarash (also spelled Hanatarashi) was a notorious Japanese noise band founded in 1983 by Yamantaka Eye, who later gained fame with Boredoms. Emerging from Osaka’s underground scene, Hanatarash became infamous for their chaotic, often dangerous live performances that pushed the boundaries of music, art, and public safety. Their shows featured power tools, heavy machinery, and shocking stunts—like Eye driving a backhoe through a venue wall or nearly severing his leg with a circular saw. Rooted in the Japanoise and industrial movements, their sound was a brutal collage of distortion, destruction, and anti-musical experimentation, inspired by acts like Einstürzende Neubauten. Though banned from many venues due to their extreme antics, Hanatarash left a lasting legacy in noise music, embodying a raw, anarchic energy that blurred the line between performance and provocation.
