Gurgel Motores was Brazil’s pioneering homegrown car manufacturer, founded in 1969 by engineer João do Amaral Gurgel, with the bold ambition of creating a 100% national automobile industry. The company initially built fiberglass-bodied buggies on Volkswagen Beetle chassis before innovating with its patented Plasteel (fiberglass and steel composite) and introducing unique traction systems. Gurgel produced notable models like the Xavante off-roaders, the X-12 (its biggest commercial success), and even early electric prototypes such as the Itaipu in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1987, it launched the BR-800, Brazil’s first fully domestically designed and manufactured car, symbolizing industrial autonomy. Despite technical creativity and cultural impact, Gurgel Motores struggled against multinational dominance, lack of government support, and economic challenges, ultimately closing in 1996.
