Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention were a groundbreaking American rock band formed in 1965, known for their eclectic fusion of rock, jazz, classical, and avant‑garde music, combined with biting satire and surreal humor. Originally emerging from the R&B group The Soul Giants, Zappa reshaped them into a vehicle for his experimental vision, leading to their debut Freak Out! (1966), one of the first double albums in rock history and a cornerstone of the counterculture. The Mothers pushed boundaries with albums like Absolutely Free, We’re Only in It for the Money (a parody of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper), and Uncle Meat, blending orchestral arrangements, doo‑wop, and absurdist comedy. Their ever‑shifting lineup featured virtuoso players such as Ian Underwood, George Duke, and Ruth Underwood, while Zappa’s leadership ensured the band remained a laboratory for radical musical ideas until its dissolution and reformation in the 1970s.
