Fine Fare was a major British supermarket chain founded in 1951 in Welwyn Garden City, which grew rapidly through the 1960s to become the largest operator of supermarkets in Europe before closing in 1988. Owned for much of its history by Associated British Foods under Garfield Weston, Fine Fare was known for innovation: it introduced the UK’s first budget own‑label range, Yellow Pack, in 1980, and was the first British supermarket to sell organic food in 1983. At its peak, the chain operated hundreds of stores nationwide, with bright yellow branding and a reputation for affordable groceries. In 1986, it was acquired by the Dee Corporation, rebranded as Gateway, and eventually absorbed into Somerfield, but it remains remembered as a pioneer of modern British supermarket shopping.
