Crisco Disco was a notorious gay nightclub in New York City’s Meatpacking District during the late 1970s and early 1980s, remembered for its mix of disco culture, sexual liberation, and edgy underground energy. Located at 15th Street and 10th Avenue, it became a key venue in LGBT nightlife, often compared to iconic clubs like Paradise Garage. Its most famous feature was the DJ booth, built inside a giant mock can of Crisco shortening—a cheeky nod to Crisco’s use as a lubricant in gay subculture at the time. The club embodied the era’s blend of dance and sexual freedom, with reports noting that at Crisco Disco, “dancing took second place to sex.” Though it eventually closed, it remains a symbol of queer nightlife history and the raw, unfiltered spirit of New York’s disco scene.
