Cadet Concept was a short‑lived but influential offshoot of Chess Records’ Cadet label, launched in 1967 by Marshall Chess to release psychedelic‑leaning blues, rock, and experimental soul. It became famous for bold crossover projects like Muddy Waters’ Electric Mud and After the Rain, which reimagined traditional blues with fuzz guitars and psychedelic production, and for Rotary Connection, a studio‑created psychedelic soul band featuring arranger Charles Stepney and future R&B star Minnie Riperton. The label also licensed Status Quo’s Pictures of Matchstick Men, their only American hit, and briefly signed other adventurous acts before being phased out in 1971 as Chess Records was sold to GRT Corporation.
