In 1923, the Bauhaus staged its first major public exhibition in Weimar, marking a pivotal shift from expressionist craft toward industrial design and functionalism. Spearheaded by founder Walter Gropius, the showcase—titled Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar 1919–1923—featured architecture, furniture, typography, and experimental art, all unified under the provocative slogan “Art and Technology – A New Unity”. This moment crystallized the Bauhaus ethos: merging aesthetics with mass production, and redefining modern design as a socially transformative force. The exhibition not only legitimized the school’s avant-garde approach but also laid the groundwork for its global influence.
