Bagpuss (1974) was a beloved British children’s television series created by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate, featuring a “saggy old cloth cat” who came to life with his toy friends in a magical lost-and-found shop. Each of the 13 episodes began with a sepia-toned introduction of a little girl named Emily, who placed broken or forgotten objects in the shop window; when she left, Bagpuss and companions like Professor Yaffle the woodpecker, Madeleine the rag doll, Gabriel the toad, and a chorus of mice would awaken to explore and repair the items. Though only a single season was made, the show’s gentle storytelling, folk-inspired music, and whimsical charm made it a cult classic, frequently repeated into the 1980s and later voted the UK’s favourite children’s programme in a 1999 BBC poll.
